Bad cap

The problem with the 4AG is the different variations they come from the factory.  Even though the parts are swappable, owners need to be aware of the replacements and check what version the part came from.

A car came in running a tad crappy.  Upon inspection, I find the center terminal is worn out.  The 4AGE was of the RWD variety, but was equipped with a distributor from an MR2.  What cause the above problem, was the rotor installed in the distributor was for RWD cars.  The rotor for the MR2 is shorter.  The mismatch of the cap and rotor created a big gap in the center terminal and rotor.  So you end up with a lot electrical arcing, which resulted in a bad running car and money in my pocket.  That's why always match up the old parts with the new parts to make sure they're correct.

Online buying

*Just another rant* Even though there's tons of info the net for even a child to build a corolla, it just amazes me that they're still people doing rookie mistakes.  This axle was bought online by a customer and sent to me for inspection.  Just like many used parts on the net, it was advertised in great shape.  First thing I notice was this flange.  It should be completely flat. What I suspect is the amateurs installed this non lsd into a lsd rear end.  If you do your net research you would know that the axle needs to be cut down for it to fit properly, or the bearing will protrude slight.  Here the previous owner not know what they were doing, forced the flange over the bearing protrusion and pretty much bent up the flange.  If they ran the car like that, there is a possibility they also damaged the LSD.  Hmm buyer beware when that thing comes up for sale it's in' great shape'.

Small details

Most chaps who like to build their cars for JDM specifications, always go for the big things like bumpers, lights, etc.  Easily noticeable and gets big points at the show.  For me it's the small details, like these battery brackets for example.  The lower one is for U.S.A. cars and the one above is for Japan cars.  One thing I do like about using the Japan bracket, is that it fits on the smaller and lighter Honda battery quite nicely.  That reminds me, I need to clean it up.  Negative points.

Killer AE86 where are you?

I remember seeing this car a few years ago parked at a show.  Billed as the killer AE86 I was curious what kind of times it would pull on the track. It certainly has a long list of parts and mods to rival a circuit car.

I haven't seen it kill anything, maybe a few hearts at the show.  I wonder what happened to it.

Adding flex

One thing i've hated about the corolla headers, is that they don't add a flex pipe to them.  With all twists and vibrations no wonder they have a tendency to crack.  Since I pay good money for header and don't wish to chop them up.  I just replace the cat with a flanged flex pipe.  Of course this would be for off road use only.

Goodbye V8

With the end of the 2013 Formula 1 season.  Means an end to the V8 era.  I'm blessed to have heard your song in person and will now live on my memory.  I can't wait for the era of the dark side, the turbocharge 6 cylinder.

Friday track day

Barney for the most part has been more of a hibernating bear than an attack bear.  Once a year I take him out for a few laps to get the juices flowing before he goes back into hibernation mode.  A few weeks back a friend invited me out to streets of willow for some Friday event.  Since it was almost the end of the year I figure it was time to wake up barney.

The Comikaze

After attending the Wonder Con in Anaheim a year ago.  I've been fascinated with these comic conventions.  Someday i'd like to check out Comic Con one of these days, but those are so popular, tickets seller faster than my reflexes.  So I go to smaller events like this Comikaze Expo.

Making a tire rack

Attempt #1
As cool as hording tires can be, it's a pain trying to navigate through the garage.  So I went to home depot, bought some wood and built a quick and easy tire rack.  It didn't make much of a dent, yeah I own lots of tires, I decided to try  my hand at carpentry.

Rare Club4AG

Back in the early days of Club4AG, parts for the AE86 was difficult to come by.  If you wanted some cool parts, you had to look to the other side of the pacific, Japan not China.  One of the big things at the time was doing 20 valve swaps.  The only down side was a proper header or lack of.  But Moto from Club4AG contracted Techno Spirits boss Kumakura san to a make couple headers for the left hand drive cars.  I forget how many went into circulation but I do remember 16v and 20v versions being made.

Just like my 80's Corolla, I like my 80's anime.  Macross is tops on the list next to Robotech.  After missing a few years, I finally remembered to mark the calender for this event.

The outskirts of Los Angeles

There's not many places that I can cater to hobbies like this place does.  Way back, when I owned a black 1st generation 4Runner (aka Black Mamba) I would go cross rivers, catch some air, and play in the mud.

A few miles further up the road, I took the 80's corolla (aka Silver Surfer) up for some spirited runs through it's many corners, pretending to be Takumi on a tofu run.

In between the two spots is a range where I can stop and have a call of duty moment.

Off the chain

Made in England, it's special

Over the years i've accumulated quite a few tools.  From old wooden handled screw drivers to just odd specialty tools which have stumped me on it's purpose.  Like this tool above, do you know it's purpose.  It's been sitting in my tool box for years and I never new what I did.  That is until recentl,y this tool geek showed me a chain breaker that he uses for rebuilding bike chains.  WTH?? it's like a light bulb went off.  All these years (over 15) this tool has been sitting in the tool box and I finally know it does.

Red dog do you read?

The red starlet is still here baking in the socal weather.  Still quite a ways from being completed.  I still have many things that needed to be done.  Though I was able to tackle a them the past couple of weekends.  Like making a hole for the relocated transmission shifter.
