Never seen this happen before, but it’s one of many things that can happen to an old car. <br />
Can’t be driving around not knowing if I’m actually going empty so I had to investigate.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div align="center">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-eVjt-i3ae1Q/WlxRq_WRt8I/AAAAAAAAVJ4/2X1o32jYfcQ0feQlBg3ssafTs7gUl4_owCHMYCw/s1600-h/20171118_143209%255B5%255D"><img alt="20171118_143209" border="0" height="484" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1GiAreqgMs8/WlxRrQYD0aI/AAAAAAAAVJ8/e6l4-PxqHtMc7LXqrBkEeFpttdYymusfgCHMYCw/20171118_143209_thumb%255B3%255D?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; display: inline;" title="20171118_143209" width="364" /></a></div>
Yanked out the fuel sending unit. I wish the fuel pump was that easy. Then pry open the cover to get to the sending unit resistor.<br />
<br />
<div align="center">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4VbbnvDs_2I/WlxRsUwn6NI/AAAAAAAAVKA/AXxc1jgzwz8eY7iRvlSPm8u6OWHzsGwwQCHMYCw/s1600-h/20171118_142904%255B8%255D"><img alt="20171118_142904" border="0" height="484" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--sDm3FQmu7E/WlxRtBPFfSI/AAAAAAAAVKE/-i4MYlr7iVIRo7vCu_kYWInBlGAiozraACHMYCw/20171118_142904_thumb%255B6%255D?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; display: inline;" title="20171118_142904" width="364" /></a></div>
Upon closer inspection I didn’t see much out of the ordinary, but I did clean up the resistor bar (it’s the orange piece) to make sure it has a good contact.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-jJIeyj1ehbI/WlxRtToogQI/AAAAAAAAVKI/UubVT_ofUq0IcCoBoddmYAgRt6nUOvcrQCHMYCw/s1600-h/20171118_143152%255B6%255D"><img alt="20171118_143152" border="0" height="484" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-x5bTar9kaSY/WlxRuJ9gfXI/AAAAAAAAVKM/5frNVEm4mQks0mtyJ5HjMBFphmVLuAXsgCHMYCw/20171118_143152_thumb%255B4%255D?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" title="20171118_143152" width="364" /></a><br />
Then reassemble and throw back in to the car. It did function properly afterwards, but as for the reason I can’t say. Maybe there was just a small amount of corrosion to throw off the needle.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5270889565837112361.post-22792754974139995242018-01-17T23:33:00.000-08:002018-01-17T23:33:07.061-08:00ナックルパワー! 恐るべしAE86 master Ueo testing out some steering knuckles on a S15.<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="344" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/F2a2gpJ9MGY" width="459"></iframe>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5270889565837112361.post-34177321994658764632018-01-15T05:46:00.000-08:002018-01-15T05:46:00.416-08:00AE86 Tech #86-36: The Dingle Ball<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-gq1zPjse4C8/WlxOHOYHlrI/AAAAAAAAVJQ/pACcgy8LU9MwGzRJOXefSweLqCCDNISggCHMYCw/s1600-h/20170827_1726587"><img alt="20170827_172658" border="0" height="484" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-pl8Xhic4QxY/WlxOHqtDC8I/AAAAAAAAVJU/Cm4hmuNPW601NW3mWRVh5RLv5YJhPlnzACHMYCw/20170827_172658_thumb4?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" title="20170827_172658" width="364" /></a><br />
What the heck is a dingle ball. If you don’t see it, it’s the little nub protruding out at the 2:00 position of the thermostat. Most thermostats I came across always had this built in. Especially if you buy factory issue stuff. . But if you’re cheap and get some aftermarket mediocre piece, here’ s what you get.<br />
<a name='more'></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-GuLhLTXfC5A/WlxOH-czDjI/AAAAAAAAVJY/UV6emKXJ0wwAyDsUG28qNYkOQP91f5mJgCHMYCw/s1600-h/20170827_1723387"><img alt="20170827_172338" border="0" height="315" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XMNBppwxrTY/WlxOIeBZBkI/AAAAAAAAVJc/-XLLygUOm3wFPzyGTbhZxt5l8ULj86QMgCHMYCw/20170827_172338_thumb4?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" title="20170827_172338" width="419" /></a><br />
As you can plainly see there’s no dingle ball to be seen. But why is that? The purpose of the dingle ball is to help with removing any trapped air bubbles in the cooling system faster. When the thermostat is closed, especially after a cooling system service, trapped bubbles have no where to go until the thermostat opens up. You can get by with squeezing the radiator hoses to help move bubbles out of the system. It’ s just one extra thing to do. So why do we have a drill bit sitting beside the thermostat? Well a couple of beers and boredom makes one do strange things.<br />
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-NVmRvGClm04/WlxOI65h2MI/AAAAAAAAVJg/spR-GVxAUgcbpEh_Ea56p58qPt-bsz4MQCHMYCw/s1600-h/20170827_1725587"><img alt="20170827_172558" border="0" height="484" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-AEOn5tjLPMM/WlxOJFxAkcI/AAAAAAAAVJk/O84ZRnMVPNkRX1ir1gdbPOl1vxKYcNfHwCHMYCw/20170827_172558_thumb4?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" title="20170827_172558" width="364" /></a><br />
Using a tiny bit (1/64 I believe), a small hole was drilled out. This should be enough to function like the dingle ball with out affecting the function of the thermostat. Though I did miss the mark when drilling it should have been closer to the USA marking (see #1 pic above). Don’t drink beer in the garage while operate power tools or you’ll end up in the wrong spot.
