R.I.P. Walt

Racer Walt Bohren passed away days ago, but I just found out.  Racing rotary cars in the 70's and 80's.  Including the Racing Beat/ Akai RX 7 (shown above) in the IMSA racing series.  He helped forge Mazdas racing program in America.  My condolences to family.

In n Out

Nelumbo nuciferaImage via Wikipedia

No it's not about food, there's other blogs for that. Wasting time like I usually do, there isn ews of former F1 champ Schumacher returning seems to be a done deal. Read that here

But with that comes the bad. I don't mean Tiger, you can watch TMZ for that. It is unfortunate that J F1 driver Sato has not been signed to drive for Lotus. It may have been the conspiracy of the white man, but where else is the asian guy supposed to go since there is not more Toyota or Honda. The sad news is posted up on here.

SKUSA SuperNats 13

skusa20090022

Karting is considered one of the purest forms of motorsport. No wings, susupension, or team orders. Not too long ago I visited the SKUSA Super Nationals, held at the Rio Hotel and Casino parking lot in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is like the world series of karting, with 425 competitors from 25 countries. A bunch of talented drivers showing off their skills to hopefully one day step up into bigger and better things, even a couple of drivers from F1 and Indy showed up in their ranks.

With fields as large as 40 compeititors this made for some great racing in all classes. I haven't been this excited watching a race in a long time.

Even hachiroku invades karting.

If it wasn't for the F1 drivers attending this event, I probably wouldn't have attended thsi event. Definitely worth the money to watch alot of great racing. You'll probably see me here next year, hopefully driving ;) For more information on next years event click on their website.

Long Beach Grand Prix 2009

Long Beach, California, home to the Ice Dogs, the Queen Mary, and my old hometown. Once a year in April, the thunder of Indy Cars fills ocean drive. Way back I used to come here every year. Lately it's been once in a blue moon. Fortunately, this year I was able to score a ticket for saturday.
Pro winner Al Unser Jr. and celebrity winner Keanu Reeves taking a victory lap!

Which included the Toyota celebrity race and
Taka Aono in the lifestyle expo hall.
Formula D tandem practice.

Definitely a plus to see awesome cars racing and drifting. The highlight of the day was having Danica Patrick passing by within inches of me, she must be practicing. Definitely a minus for my camera crapping out early and didn't get a picture. The pics themselves are not that great either since it's literally pointing and shooting. If you recall the screen is broke.

Anyways for the rest of the crappy pics go here.

R.I.P. Larry H. Miller

Most of you may not know this guy. I didn't really have a clue up until a few days ago, reading AutoBlog. Yet there was a small connection I had with him. Though I never met the man personally, I guess he does have a passion for motor racing. He's the man responsible for the creation of Miller Motorsports Park. Definitely one of my favorite tracks I had the opportunity to drive last summer. Yet there was more to this man besides motorsports as I learned more about him. Let's take some time to remember this great man and his life at this link.

Grip Day 2: Almost but not quite

A very wet saturday was supposed to be the Drift Associations 1st Grip Day event at Horsethief Mile located inside Willow Springs Raceway. If you like short courses, or touge style track then this track is for you. I've been 2 months without driving an event so it's about time I got my fix. Unfortunately it was cancelled due people flaking because of the wet weather. Since I was there, I took advantage of the situation and took a couple of snaps. You know I need to get my $10.00 worth.

For the few core drivers that stuck it out, the balcony was open for drivers. For a fee, they were able to burn up tires any way they please.

I did spot what looks like Tanner Foust driving a Toyota Supra on Streets, another one of my favorite tracks or maybe it's just his helmet. A jack of all trades when it comes to driving. From what I hear, he'll be driving a RWD Scion TC this season of drifting.

A Ford GT 40 adored in Gulf colors was romping at the big track. It looked very at home on this track. I heard that it even decided to go off course and get some air. That must hurt, kudos for it's owner bringing it out in the less than ideal conditions to stretch it's legs.

There was at least one Corolla keeping the spirit alive.

Oh and this one too. People need to get their weekend fix not matter what they drive.

During the course of the day it just got really cold and I decided to call it a day.

And I ran into this cloud full of water. It was a tad wild on the way home.

Do you prefer wet or dry

Were not talking about burritos from Albertos either. Check this out, an all out Formula Atlantic dry sump system is up for sale on ebay. I'm just droooling to get my oily paws on this setup. the starting bid is 1800 and there's one bid so far. There's about a day left on it so you better get going. If you wanna be the popular guy at the show or at the track this is a must have item.
