What the heck is a dingle ball. If you don’t see it, it’s the little nub protruding out at the 2:00 position of the thermostat. Most thermostats I came across always had this built in. Especially if you buy factory issue stuff. . But if you’re cheap and get some aftermarket mediocre piece, here’ s what you get.
As you can plainly see there’s no dingle ball to be seen. But why is that? The purpose of the dingle ball is to help with removing any trapped air bubbles in the cooling system faster. When the thermostat is closed, especially after a cooling system service, trapped bubbles have no where to go until the thermostat opens up. You can get by with squeezing the radiator hoses to help move bubbles out of the system. It’ s just one extra thing to do. So why do we have a drill bit sitting beside the thermostat? Well a couple of beers and boredom makes one do strange things.
Using a tiny bit (1/64 I believe), a small hole was drilled out. This should be enough to function like the dingle ball with out affecting the function of the thermostat. Though I did miss the mark when drilling it should have been closer to the USA marking (see #1 pic above). Don’t drink beer in the garage while operate power tools or you’ll end up in the wrong spot.
